Hello all, i have some vertical separator vessels with a skirt support, those are code vessels, my question: is it required per ASME code add vent holes in the skirt? if so, how many and what are their typical size and location? what is the code reference paragraph that state this requirement?
thanks a lot.

The ASME Code has no interest in supports except insofar as they impact the pressure boundary. Your specific question is not covered.

RE: Vent Holes - for a skirt joining two vessels, you only need to allow 'breathing' for air thermal expansion. I'd use a 1/2" hole, and since one is the minimum I'd use two holes.

As clarified above, the code is not specifying number and size of vent holes. It depends on the skirt diameter and the operating temperature that can be seen within the skirt. For a 40" dia skirt I use 4 off 2" pipe sleeves welded in the skirt, but for a hot bottom I would use larger vents. The essence is the calculation of the openings, including proximity of other openings like access openings and their reinforcement. Use a recognized software like advised above, due to complications on designing several openings, ligaments, etc.
Cheers,
