vertical stress distribution below a wall with no footing 1

Please see attached sketch.

The dashed red lines in the sketch distribute the weight of the wall (vertical red arrow) for greater stability. The angle of the red lines depends on the soil composition.

What happens if the black hashed line of soil is removed from an outer edge of the wall as shown? What could i expect to see and why?

Recommended for you

1) For granular material you can expect to see soil fall out of the free side and be accompanied by additional settlement.

2) For stiff clays you can expect to see bulging out of the cut vertical surface accompanied by additional settlement.

3) In both cases, it's a function of Poison's ratio or some dirt concept akin to it. You compress something and you get lateral displacement and stress.

4) I'm not clear on how you have the lateral resistance that you indicate for the applied lateral load if you remove that black hashed soil. Do tell.

5) Hopefully a dirt pro like PEinc stops buy to chime in on this.
 
Assume the soil is competent to resist vertical load from the wall, then what is there to resist the turning moment due to the lateral load about the toe of the wall? Are you a junior student in college?
