Vertical Turbine Fire Pumps - Canned Lineshaft or Sumps?

Hello,

There is a remotely located fire pump to serve a building sprinkler system. A couple fire pump reps are saying either they are not aware of a canned lineshaft setup with their pump, or that it has to be in a 4 foot diameter sump.

I had another manufacturer do a vertical turbine pump that was not specifically for a fire protection system, and it came with a canned lineshaft.

So I was wondering if canned lineshafts were not allowed by the NFPA for fire pumps? Only could be used for domestic or irrigation?

Thanks for any input.

'Can pump' is a defined term in NFPA 20, so I don't believe they are necessarily prohibited. I've never heard of or seen one used as a fire pump, though.

What kind of water supply are you trying to pump from?

Thanks for the response.

It is pumping well water, which is stored in a tank. The tank is about 20 feet away from the vertical turbine pumps. The bottom of the sump or can, should be about 5 feet below the bottom of the tank.
