Vertical VS Horizontal

In general, Vertical vapour liquid separators are mostly in use in CPI compared to horizontal separators.Is there any specific reason?

My previous answer referred to vapour flow verticality. Horizontal vapour-liquid KO separators or liquid-liquid coalescers provide larger hold up times for efficient separation, especially for reflux and top product drums on distillation columns. Otherwise, both horizontal and vertical drums separate liquids from vapours by gravity. Horizontal drums facilitate the separation by settling of (relatively) smaller amounts of water from hydrocarbons by the use of draw-off collecting boots.
 
The process reasoning is covered well by 25362. However, other reasons are based on eceonomics: eg. a very tall vessel is less ecomomical to build than a horizontal vessel; because of the civil fdn etc and wind loads.
On the otherhand if a smaller vessel is installed horizontally, it requires a larger foot print.

Typically, both horizontal and vertical vessels will do the job; so compare the tonnage for both options and go for the cheaper one. Of course you do not want your separator to look like a tall pipe.
