a condenser cooling water system with 5100mm diameter pipe has a 2000mm drain connection which is guided upwards and need to be closed with a blind flange. The Flange thickness for the blind as per UG34, SecVII,Div1, equation 2.5,1 works out to about 114mm. Are there codal provisions whereby I can use a thinner Blind flange (say 60 to 70mm) with reinforcing beams? What are the calculations for sizing and spacing the beams?

Suggest that you abandon use of ASME rules as the max design pressure and system function means that these rules do not apply.

What is your design pressure and proposed materials of construction ?

What is the configuration, pressure rating and code construction for the mating flange ?

How much deflection is permisible at the center of the flange ?

What are "codal provisions" ?

Consider a simplified "Roark" type circular plate calculation .... IMHO, a simplified analysis is appropriate for a CCW system.
