Very odd volt drop

Good afternoon all. I have a strange volt drop issue. We have a very old packing machine. I have a CompAir solenoid valve that has failed. Its a 5/2 valve with a 110 solenoid. No bid deal right? Changed it out for a new valve etc. Test and valve works. However once voltage is applied again valve does not work and voltage drops to 30 volts. Also if the solenoid is not connected I get 110v ac. When connected I get 80V ac. The old valve worked ok and is still intermittent. Whats am I missing here?

Volt drop? Or the solenoid is to much draw?

Cheers in advance.

If you replaced a DC solenoid with an AC solenoid on a DC circuit, that would be normal as the coil quickly burns out.

When pulled in it has a trickle voltsge of 30v. Its just enough to not let the spring return. Its 110v ac control circuit. Im.thinking of adding a 110v spdt relay. When not activated the coil.shorts itself out. This would remove that trickle voltage1000020937.jpg

Not enough information.
Your source may be failing.
That would explain the intermittent with the old valve.
The new valve may be faulty.

"But it can't be bad. It's new."
Anyone who believes that needs more years in the field.

Hi waross,

I did think maybe the new one is faulty. I should have said I did try 2 others. I'm going to test the voltages at the transformer tomorrow while I operate the valve.

How about some specs or good pictures of thee valve and of the power source?

Your image shows three electrical pins on your device.

Solenoids typically have two connections for on-off.

Switches can have 3 to allow for N.O. or N.C. operation.
