Switchgear is the equipment the resides in the switchyard. More specifically, switchgear usually refers to switches, circuit breakers and related equipment.
SWITCHGEAR: “A general term covering switching and interrupting devices and their combination with associated control, metering, protective, and regulating devices, also assemblies of these devices with associate interconnections, accessories, enclosures, and supporting structures, used primarily in connection with the generation, transmission, distribution, and conversion of electric power” IEEE-Std 100.
SWITCHYARD: This term is commonly used by the power plant people and is synonym of high voltage substation witch is the term commonly used in the power utility environment. The system typically begins with the high-voltage terminals of the step-up power transformers and extends to the point where transmission lines are attached to the take-off structures.
