Any one have any experience good or bad with eaton/vickers 50M motors? Have some that are breaking.

The 25M(50M's smaller version) was used at our mill for several years with water glycol. They failed frequently-most of the time blown shaft seal. I checked the case drain pressure but only with a gage-it was acceptable. The RPM was over the recommended rate and a brake valve was plumbed wrong-apparently from day one. After these problems were corrected we seldom lost a motor. Maytag

pumpster;

What is breaking?

How often does the break occur?

What Fluid?

What operating pressure?

What is the circuit design like?

What is the cycle frequency?

Most premature failures are caused by one or some the above being out of range or in many cases the circuit is a flawed design that can be fixed with minor cahnges.

The Vickers 50M has been around for years and is performing very well in many applications in Mobile and Industrial settings.

50 M used as a drive motor for a submersible pump. No more than 2500 psi. We use rapeseed oil as the fluid. Have used 25M,35M, and 45M for years with similar failures but not to the level of the 50M. 50M fails about 50-75% of the time. obviously we ceased using it.

Wear pattern on springs indicates some apparent bowing of the spring causing excessive wear on one side. Wear sppears to be causing martensite formation and cracking which leads to spring failure. If spring is found broken but still in the holder,there is no wear on the faces or inner part of the cam ring.

pumpster;

According to Vickers catalog 400 the motor is rated at 2,250 PSI continuoous at 2,200 RPM or less. Pressure rating drops to 500 PSI continuoous at 2,800 RPM. These figures are slightly higher for Intermittent Operation.

Intermittent operation pressure of 2,500 PSI at 3,000 RPM and lower.

Out of the aforementioned Vickers catalog: "Intermittent service equals 10% of overall time each application of pressure and/or speed not to exceed over 6 seconds"

I forgot to ask RPM so this could be pert of the problem.
