I'm looking to verify the weld in ASME VIII-1 Appendix 2, Figure 2-4(4b). I remember in older code books, I HAD a 1986 book, that the upper flange weld leg was dimensioned as 'c' and the lower weld (outside of pipe) was as it's currently shown, min. = 0.7c.

Looking at Figure (3) & (3a) they mash up the inner and outer welds... so it could be min. = 0.7c. I didn't find an interpretation or anything noting a change.... assuming I remember correctly

Anyone have any insight into this??

Sketches 4b and 4c first appeared in the 2007 Edition, 2008 Addenda, and have not changed since. The 2008 Summary of Changes references (06-925), but not sure if that will point you at something you can read for background info.

Having the 4b and 4c groove depth as 0.7c matches having the 3 and 3a fillet throat as 0.7c, so I think the 4b and 4c sketches are appropriately dimensioned.

When you are recalling the "c" dimension, any chance that's Figure 2-4 sketch 9 for optional flanges?

Maybe I was thinking of another sketch..

but if you look at sketch 3 & 3a, you have 'c' in contact with the flange and the pipe, in 4b & 4c you have '0.7c' in contact with the pipe and '0.7(0.7c) in contact with the flange.

Oh well... guess I'll just go with the picture in the book.

I don't see the issue with the figures in 2-4. 3, 3a, 4b, 4c all require 0.7c in shear for the weld. For a fillet this is through the throat and for a partial pen weld this is directly along the interface between the two parts joined. All seems to be correct.

Maybe you are thinking of piping, there are different requirements for internal and external welds in B31.3, Figure 328.5.2B.
