I am curious at what publications might be available that discuss the logic behind the VIII-I equations. In particular, Appendix 2.

I was just advised that John Breen (and others) can refer me to ancient ASME papers that, at one time, were published explaining the logic behind the code equations. And that there was an ASME publication developed that specifically addressed this.

If John et al can help, I will appreciate it.

I was able to find a book a couple of years ago that contains most of the papers on which the current code is based. I do not recall the company which had it (a used technical book outlet on the internet) but it wasn't overly expensive. Look around for "Pressure Vessel and Piping Design: Collected Papers 1927-1959". This is an ASME Publication and they have it listed in their book list but it is not in print.

The paper that you are probably looking for is "Formulas for Stresses in Bolted Flanged Connections" by E. O. Waters, D. B. Wesstrom, D. B. Rossheim, and F. S. G. Williams. If you can get a hold of the entire book it is a very useful reference. Definitely worth the 35$ US that it cost me.

For those who might be interested in "Pressure Vessel and Piping Design: Collected Papers 1927-1959" there are several to be found on abebooks.com and alibris.com. I have ordered one for myself. There are several others available.

As for the other book, "Formulas for Stresses in Bolted Flanged Connections", I have not found any for that title. If anyone finds a source, I would appreciate it if you would let me know.

The paper I mentioned is included in the book. To give an idea of the size, the book has 710 pages.

Oh, thank you, I guess I missed that point. I will not search for that anymore. I am looking forward to receiving the book.

From what I gather, it should be a nice resource and it is a shame that we tend to loose track of these matters.
