Catia has a tool in assemblies that shows a virtual different view of the assembly.
It doesn't affect the structure of the real assembly; it is just a virtual representation that offer a better visualization and understanding of the assembly.

1) The real assembly structure:

2) The virtual representation using the tool named "Scene"; the components of the assembly can be moved but they can't be modified:

I was wondering if NX has a similar capability.

Yes, you can create an 'Exploded' View, which does not affect the spacial relationship between the Components in the actual Assembly.
