I posted the following to Tek-Tips and haven't heard diddly...

Malwarebytes informed me that I have a malware. I've tried half a dozen web based methods of removal without success. The infection is PUP.OPTIONAL.LEGACY.

Can anyone suggest a means of totally removing this infection? Nothing seems to work.

Remove your hard drive. Connect it to another computer with fully updated antivirus and scan.

Having the drive connected to a different computer will allow it to be scanned and cleaned without using its operating system files. Then there are no OS protections exploited to protect the virus.

I have a cable that allow one to plug in a detached hard drive to USB. So far has worked every time.

TheTick... I was hoping it would be more simple, but, am prepared to go that route.

thanks, Dik

Stars to all... thanks, gentlement. Finally got rid of it; we'll see if it re-infects (a feature of this one).

I've rebooted it half a dozen times today... and, still not back. Hopefully it's gone... had to scrub it from the registry. Really persistent.

Adware is pretty insidious. I remember an infection that had multiple programs running that performed "overwatch" on each other, so the antivirus had to remove all the programs essentially simultaneously.
