We have to solve a very special pumping problem in an explosive environment.

Can anybody help with data about the viscosity of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) 20% solution at lower temperatures between 0 and -20°C?

Can´t find any data on the web or in my literature.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks @psafety.

I´m looking for values below zero degree. Do you also have such data?

No further viscosity values, appears -20F it freezes.

Take a look at page 10 of the link below:

There's a graph showing viscosity vs temperature values. The graph doesn't cover the range you're looking for, but you could extrapolate values of interest (between 0 °C and -20 °C and for a 20% NaOH solution you're still above freezing point).

Thanks a lot @ione.

This graph I was using sins some time now and it´s the only source I know so far which gives such detailed information. Unfortunately not in the range that I´m looking for right now. Extrapolating would be sufficient in the range around 0 °C. But we are narrowing -10 to -20°C in this special process and the extrapolatet data would not be as accurate as we need as we are narrowing freezing point.

Anybody else has some idea or source?

According to the chart of the solidfying curve for caustic, between 16% and 24% the solidifying temperature is less than or equal to -20[º]C; lowest is approx -28[º]C for 19.5% solution.

But unfortunately none of the data I have gives a viscosity at the temperatures you are interested in.

The references I have include a data sheet from Solvay Chemicals and OxyChem Caustic Soda .

Can't find my Rubber book at the moment (just moved house) but I guess if the data was in there you'd not be posting.

@ione

thanks again the IAPWS link was great but I could not find any library for this journal.

I think, we have to do some measurements at some laboratory at first.

Hi,

From the Orica Chemicals "Caustic Soda Handbook" issued September 1998 in Australia, it was an 'Absolute viscosity of Caustic Soda Solutions' versus temperature (in degrees Celsius) graph. For a 20% solution, I obtained the following viscosities:

at 10 deg C the Viscosity = approx 7 cP

at 0 deg C the Viscosity = approx 12-13 cP

at -10 deg C the Viscosity = approx 24-25 cP

minus 10 deg C was the limit of the viscosity readings for a 20% solution.

Hope this helps.
