Two parts to this question:
[ul]
[li]by how much can viscosity vary between different batches of diesel and marine distillates, marine gas oil? I see from data I have that marine distillates DMX and DMA have maximum viscosities quoted at 5.5cst and 6 cst (at 40degC) but that isn't to say they won't be much less on occassion.[/li]
[li] how does this affect engine efficiency?[/li]
[/ul]
I do recall that real time online measurement of both density and viscosity was important for engine testing during manufacture for power factor correction (SAE J ????) but I assume this was mainly to compensate the engines for operating on a variety of different qualities of fuel and for a brief cold test i.e. I don't know how significant the variations may be for an engine at normal loads and working temperatures.
I understand that injector manufacturers need to be able to rlate performance unde test to viscosity or control the viscosity which does imply that there may be some effects during operation, but how significant is it?
