Volumetric Examination requirement for ASME Section I

Table PW-11 as per ASME Sec I: 2017, states that all longitudinal welds are to be volumetrically examined throughout their entire length.

Now. Considering the case of ASME SA 312 welded pipes (welded without addition of filler metal), ASME sec II part A: 2017 does not mandate volumetric examination on its longitudinal welds. There is an option between hydrostatic test and volumetric examination.

The question is, if ASME SA 312 welded pipe is used for a Code stamping job or Boiler Proper Piping Job, is it mandatory that all the longitudinal welds of ASME SA 312 welded pipes to be volumetrically examined?

SA-312 is only permitted for select application based on PG-9.1.2. The long seam welds shall be volumetrically examined, look at PG-11.3 if used in Section I construction.

Thanks metengr for the reply.
However, PG 11.3 applies to pressure parts such as pipe fittings, valves, flanges, nozzles, welding caps,
manhole frames and covers, and pump casings that are a part of the boiler circulating system, that comply with an ASME product standard. Does PG-11.3 cover welded pipes?

Arkaprava Ghosh;
In reviewing this further, I was initially thinking that PG-11.3 would apply, but it does not appear to be directly applicable. After re-review of PW-11, unless exempted by Table PW-11, it states long seam welded butt joints are to be volumetrically examined (also review the definition of what applies to longitudinal butt welds below. Also, read carefully the General Notes in Table PW-11, which could apply.

longitudinal butt weld: includes longitudinal and spiral
welded butt joints in drums, shells, headers, pipes, and
tubes; any welded butt joint within a sphere or within a
formed or flat head or tubesheet; and welded butt joints
attaching insert‐nozzles of the type show..
