Can some one please tell me if there is an easy way to create a vulute (a snail shell kind of shape where the center is removed) in catia v5, aside from building each and every section? currently i have to build a section every 10 degrees and skin it, this is a very long process.

Please, any time saver would be appreciated.

Thank you Fernando i could not find a good picture to post. Although, not the answer i was hoping for, it does answer the question. i did find another piece of software that will create volutes but the customization of the shape is far too lacking and the price is WAY out there...oh well back at it, if any one knows a better way, please i will be back to check

Just for my curiosity, how do you create the profiles/sections ? I mean, mathematically speaking (with a software like Mathcad) or something like this? Because you can create a dat file and import the points, create curves....I've done something similar long time ago, creating 2D curves from those files in AutoCAD....

Fernando

manually :( i have been trying to find a good piece of software to do it for me but the company i work for won't pay for it and aside from that the shapes need to be sheetmetal friendly (harder than it sounds apparently). if you can suggest some good programs, i would greatly appreciate it. it takes about two weeks to create the whole thing from scratch (it sucks this way)

Potentially it is possible using (parallel curve with a law, or helix) to generate a guide curve, then use adaptive sweep to adapt the sketch according to its position along the guide curve. This however will be highly depenedent on licenses (requires GSD, possibly KWA), your skill level with these tools and the complexity of the profiles and how they change.

I don't know if this will satisfy you but you can try...see picture attached.

I found a free software called SurfX3D which can export wrl, dxf or pov files. I just inserted the wrl file in a product and play a little bit with sectioning tool...you can export sections from this product and see if this will help you...or if you have a converter....

Peter is right, if you want to be accurate I believe its better to do it directly in CATIA.

Maybe (its my hope) kapitan will give us another amazing tutorial about surfaces (if he has time, of course), showing us how to do it.

Fernando

thanks to all for all the help. i do not have the licences mentioned above so unfortunatly, it looks like the way i do it now is the best i have :( also, the software looks cool, but unfortunatly it did not seam to be what i needed, good try though, it is one that i did not find before.

the products i am working on are new and "inovative" (aka: a pain in the ass for designers" and it just appears there is nothing out there thats been developed yet {pain filled sigh} and i am not good enough with this software yet to develop scripts. i hate to admit it but i am still a beginner when it comes to catia. it is better than any of the other software i have ever used (though a library feature would be nice :p) and i think i am doing pretty damned good for only beingon it a year but scripts are beyond me as of yet :( sorry guys. but if any one can point me to a beginners scirpting tutorial, i would like to learn :)

thanks again and as before, if you think you could help me in any way further..i will be back to check often :) i think ifinally found a new home

Snail Shell surface

Well, thanks for the suggestion, ferdo - and I've certainly got plenty of time - but I don't have access to a V5 terminal anymore, as unfortunateIy I'm now in my late 60s - and retired. So, I'm sorry, I'd like to contribute something reasonably constructive to the thread, but nowadays I'm more of an occasional observer on this Catia forum, although this shell surface done in 2006 may be better than nothing - just about... it was done as a single surface; the spiral law was parabolic, and the complete shell constructed without using script, Excel macro or any other external software.

Hi,

Excellent as usual, I still have a problem: where to put the star, here or at the picture's link (joking of course, I just noticed that thread is closed).

Regards
Fernando

thank you, looked at the link and printed it out for reading during my lunch break today. thank again for all the help, this is one novice who is in way over his head and realy appreciates the wonderfull feedback that i have recived here.

Simply complex!

A fog law containing x=log(t*9+1)*90mm where x is length and t is real will replicate the logarithm curve quite nicely.

Spatial thinking indeed. Still trying to wrap my mind around it.
