I have a couple of different reference books that take quite a bit different approach to the design of stacks and towers for vortex shedding and associated vibration problems. Is there a preferred approach or method? (Specifically in being able to show when this is or is not a problem).

Bednar's approach in particular seems to give wholly unreasonable results in some cases.

For steel stacks, you could refer to chimney codes like ASME STS-1 or CICIND.

For tall pressure vessels or towers, you could also refer to the National Building Code of Canada.
