W12x40 workable gauge is 5.5" can I use 4" instead?

I'm connecting a pipe connection on the beam and the bolt distance is 4".
I also need 8" flange width to match the pipe connection base plate, so I will use W12x40.

Is there a table for minimum and maximum beam gauge for wide flange?
