Our tooling is steel used for injectiion molding and we are wanting to know if water will rust the tools and at what rate. Also with rust inhibitors added to the water will it be feasible to put in storage when not in use and for how long if at all? The water is used to keep the tool a constant tempature when it is in use but will cut down our change over time if we can leave it in ... Any recomondations?

There are many corrosion inhibitors that can be used in an aqueous bath for tools. You need to be very specific on the overall operational conditions to be able to specify the optimum system. For example, at a fine machining facility in upstate New York, we used a long chained alcohol in a cooling water that kept the machining bits cool via drippage. At another, we used a VPI (vapor phase inhibitor. How is the water being kept cool or warm? What is the peak temperature? What is the water chemistry regarding corrosivity? Calculate the Ryznar index and give me a yell and I'll point you in the right direction. You can always go to the National Association of COrrosion Engineers at and check over the listings for accredited consulting engineers in the field of water treatment and get a referral for one in your area. Don't just go to a water treatment firm and ask what should you buy. Best Regards, John Cignatta, PE
