I have an existing wash rack that will be enclosed and the client wants it ventilated. There are 4 Steam wands with degreasing chemicals in the space. Are there any codes dictating ventilation rates in a space like this? A quick google search didn't reveal anything. Neither did the UFC 4-214-03 Central Vehicle Wash Facilities.

First time poster. Any guidance would be appreciated. Sorry for the lack of info!

Hard to andwer since it really depends on what you mean by ventilate a wash rack but then referring to it later as a space.

If you have access to the industrial ventilation manual, this has a section for vapor capture design - and dictates the exhaust hood capture velocity and airflow required depending on hood or slot size, distance from contaminant source, etc. So that manual may have the answer to your question.

If it’s a whole space you are referring yo, air change rates are always a less than educated crapshoot where engineers just use the ones that have been working. But really it depends on the space use and how well the air is distributed.

A bit more information would help,
Is this wash rack operated by people using hand held steam cleaner wands, or is this an automatic wash facility using CNC programmed wands. There are two very different ventilation rates for an enclosed space with people, and an unoccupied space where nuisance drift of vapors are desired to be suppressed.

You are judged not by what you know, but by what you can do.

Sorry for the vague details. Hopefully this is better: It is a military vehicle wash rack for spraying down tanks and other MOVs that get muddy during trainings/deployments, etc. It is a double bay and measures roughly 38'Wide x 60'Long x 24' high (top of pitched roof 3/12). It is operated by people using hand held steam wands. Each wand is connected to a small mixing unit that mixes steam with diluted degreasing chemicals (still looking for info on the exact chemicals). I have access to the industrial ventilation manual. I will check that out.

Thanks,
