What are the sectors of waste management technology taught in higher education institutionsin the US and most popular with students today ?

Not sure what your actually asking. If you mean the treatment types taught, don't know about university, but my son is in wastewater treatment in the Navy. They still teach reverse osmosis, biological filtration, micro-filtration, activated carbon and ozone treatments. Funny, thought they would be farther ahead and be looking at electrolytic treatment, especially after the good results creating OH radicals using AOT (advanced oxidation technologies). They found the oxidating ability of OH radicals for and away better then ozone or other treatments for nitrogen compound destruction, let alone VOC's such as MTBE and others. They ran into problems with the corrosion problems with using 35-50% hydrogen peroxide and the typical drawbacks of UV light operation.

Don't look at the Universities here in the US for anything new and innovative, have been dealing with them for years and best I can say is they continue to re-invent the wheel,or are pursing technologies that are not practical or cost effective - like plasma generation.
