Water abnormalities

Good afternoon,


I would like an advice on one of the most important aspects we are facing.

So Drinking water is produced from seawater through desalination in our power plant and it goes to the whole city. The disinfectant we are using is the chlorine dioxide. There are a lot of reservoirs in the city where they get the same water but they also have the same dosing process of clo2 by hcl & sodium chlorite. The issues is that we find high chlorite values in the inlet of the reservoirs ( which could be a back flow ) and the outlet especially that the demand might be low which makes the water in the reservoir stagnant. The dosing happens before the water reached the reservoir. What is the main reason why chlorite is found high and any advise ?

Hi,
You should ask the supplier of chemicals for your treated water to perform a survey and to submit a diagnostic . This should be included in your contract with this company .
Anyway Troubleshooting is a site activity , nothing can be done from Internet I guess.
Note : you may have some equipment failure , just thinking about some valves leaking .

Typically, chlorinated urban water systems have free chlorine levels of around 0.1 to 0.5 parts per million. The sodium hypochlorite solution dose is calculated to give untreated water a free chlorine level of around 1 part per million. So if you add the solution (to achieve 1 part per million) to treated urban water (0.1-0.5 parts per million), the level of the overtreated water would still be in the acceptable range of 0.5-2 parts per million (which is the range that balances disinfection efficacy and reasonable taste).
