Water Based Adhesive

Hello all,

I am looking to create a new glue for my company and i/we would like it to be a water based glue. I will be gluing carbon arrow shafts to polyurethane vanes. My search started (slowly and discouragingly) with poly vinyl alcohol. It doesnt seem to have the tack and staying power that our solvent based adhesive has. Any additives? Clays? I hear boric acid helps with crosslinking and i will try it, does anyone know if this well help much?

Does any one have any expertise or knowledge with water based adhesive. I am willing to try anything. If there are any companies that anyone knows of that sells a really great water based glue, that is somehing i am willing to look into as well.

Normally cyanoacrylates are used for fletching. Why do want water based? getting water to dry in a gap is challenging and shrinkage is a problem. Sticking to the non-porous substrates would also be a problem. PVA is water soluable and will dissolve again when it gets wet.

two-part epoxy is another option and perhaps a hot melt could also work. But water-based is just asking for problems.

And polyurethane is just a pain to bond.

Why are you trying to make your own adhesive anyway? Big chemical companies with big budgets already do that - far better than you will be able to.

Well, ironically, i am part of one of those (relatively) "big companies". We have solvent based glue, we have epoxy, we have hotmelts, we have cyanoacrylates. The only one that still proves elusive is some type of water formulation. Its better for the people using it, better on the environment and better for the people who prepare the glue, including myself. Just looking for the holy grail of adhesives is all.
