Water Meter for Dedicated Fireline

I have a local AHJ asking me for a code that will help him exclude the requirements that the city water wants a water meter on a dedicated fireline. I find that to be fairly crazy but I have seen it here in a couple places in MS. ( this is a small town in MS)

I have read NFPA 24 and see that only a meter has to be listed but nothing specific. I did design a job recently that had a combined domestic and fire main with a meter & strainer, a 8" Neptune.

If the local water jurisdiction wants it I am not sure how the FM can stop it??

The wàter meter will come with a "Stand by Charge" from the water company. In NJ it is very common to have $10K annual fee for the sprinkler system for the meter, bigger water meter more $$$.

Cities want to account for water usage, how much is used, do they have a leak, etc

And if used charge for water flowed.

I do think it is crazy they charge an hlgh price just to install a meter or it set there, and no or little water flows

We mainly have gone to inside backflow with a bypass. The city charges an one time cheap price to set an electric transmitter on it

No yearly fee
