Hello,

Thank you in advance fro your time.

This is case in Federal land of Canada, We have water wells supplying water to Town for few decades. As part of disaster mitigation funding we are proposing to installed Diesel genset to supply power in emergency situations to water wells.
Federal regulation do not have clear indication of how far diesel tank shall be located form drinking water wells. Now we have been asked to comply with provincial guideline which has clear instruction on distance between water week and diesel tank. AS per provincial regulation distance between water well and diesel source shall be minimum 100 mt.

Could you please share your experience on clearance requirements between water well and diesel gneset.

Thanks,

You must be misreading. Standby units are installed with secondary containment tanks for diesel fuel. Tanks are usually above grade. Have never had an issue with separation distances.

Hi Bimr,

Yes. We do have double wall tank for diesel tank. Owner forcing us Water Act which say 100m clearance require. However it do not specify distance with double wall tank.

That's why I asked question to forum to get more information from real scenario and solution to that.

Regards,

Below text copied from Province of Alberta " Water Act"

of groundwater, other than saline groundwater, closer to a thing
described in Column 1 of Table 1 than the distance specified in
Column 2 of Table 1.
(2) If the diversion of water from a water well is licensed for
municipal purposes, no person shall locate or drill the water well
closer than 100 metres from any thing listed in Column 1 of
Table 1
Table 1
Column 1
Sources of Substance
Column 2
Minimum Distance
Required
Watertight septic tank or sewage
holding tanks
10 metres
Sub-surface weeping tile effluent

Section 47 AR 205/98
WATER (MINISTERIAL) REGULATION

Above ground storage tanks containing

Unless there is more than what you posted, the paragraph does not state that a standby generator with diesel storage tank shall not be located near a well.

It states that you shall not locate or drill a water well for ... presumably from an existing Above ground storage tanks containing petroleum substances.
