Waterproofing in pile head

May I ask of how important is the effectiveness of waterproofing in pile heads of bridge pile cap?
What can it cause to the pile in worst case?

I am not a bridge guy, but I have not attempted to waterproof pile heads in a pile cap before.

The pile cap IS the waterproofing for the pile heads.

What sort of treatment are you considering? Something in the concrete mix? A flat troweled or raked top? Am I getting close?

The application around the pile head is actually a pvc type material with adhesive and a spray membrane over it.

What kind of pile and what is the type and configuration of the cap?
