Waterproofing underground pits

Aside from specifying a water sealant, what are other ways of waterproofing pipes that penetrate an underground sump pit? Would flanges on either side of the pipes be the answer? Also, with an underground concrete vault, should additional drainage pipes or pressurized slab be specified to prevent water from infiltrating from the sides and below?

You need to be quite careful in these sorts of pipe penetrations. Any one that does not allow for settlement of either wall or pipe risks breaking the pipe. Also some of the seals and flanges can then act as anchors and if there is any significant thermal change in the pipe (>15 C) you could either stress the pipe excessively or break the seal due to pipe axial movement.

One way is to insert sleeves with puddle flanges or flanges at the end which you can seal with sealant. The pipe you seal with something like link seal

As with all things you generally get what you pay for. Any location which has a permanent or quite high water table on the outside needs some really good seals otherwise failure after a couple of years is common as is failure of the pipe if / when settlement of either part occurs.

In Canada I have seen them install LinkSeal for this type of application, Specifically for municipal construction where no gasket was cast into the concrete.

I have also seen them install a "Concrete Collar" as an addition on the outside of manholes, this is typically just a block on concrete dropped all around the connection.

If your worried about joints leaking you could also use "Blue Skin" this is a waterproof membrane installed around manhole joint to prevent water infiltration over time.
