Hello,

Is there any way to calculate the heat transfer coefficient at the shell-side surface of a tube-sheet in a shell and tube type Hx? Of course CFD is one option, but is there any easier alternative?

The shellside surface of a TEMA HX tubesheet is more or less a dead zone - there is little or no flow in this area, since the shellside nozzles will be further away. Hence, I would use natural convection htc estimation method. Its not exactly appropriate, since the natural convection current is obstructed by intervening tubes, but then this is counterbalanced somewhat by some some eddy flows in this area.

georgeverghese .. thanks for idea!..I was wondering if there is any correlation for heat transfer from a flat plate on which a number of cylinders are arranged perpendicular to the plate in an array...like tubes emerging from tubesheet.

If a similar HX has been built and is in service, one could obtain the HTC by montioring the rate of change of temperature of the tubesheet vs time once the it is placed in service, using a lumped parrameter approach .
