But, nothing terribly new. Amazon has done lots of datamining and knows when certain items are purchased, the buyer may be more interested in something else as well, something that may be totally unrelated.
I've always stuck by advice my father gave me about gift giving: always buy something that you wouldn't mind receiving. Most of my gift recipients give me strange looks.

We don't seem to get targeted coupons in UK, just piles and piles of take-away flyers. Great article though.
When I was living in the USA I had fantasies of regulary buying a bunch of bananas, some condoms a bottle olive oil and some beers from the same store, using a loyalty card.
I was quite amused when I started getting invites to join the NRA (the gun people for non Americans). I thin kit might have been the inflatable chair I bought that got me on that list.
interesting response and yes, cash is king. i have never accepted/used "club member" cards simply because i know they "target individual behavior" or purchasing habits. some coupons are readily available while entering the store or the local newspaper.
i think that by the time individuals get all there discount coupons, they end up spending more than originally planned as they have been targeted. the last thing most folks need is more junk in the home or items lying around not being used.
make a list and buy only what is on that list. cash is king!
