We will be welding on a CS sulfur tank. Is there anything special needed for the repair plan?

Hey guys,

I am creating a repair plan to replace an:
-Built 2005
-API 650 Manway Flange
-1/4" Thick
-A106 Carbon Steel
-Sulfur service
-@ ~350F

Is there anything I need to watch out for in terms of the Sulfur Service?

Thanks in advance!

Make sure the tank has been drained completely and neutralized of acid and acid residue before welding. Follow API 650 guidelines for repair.

Cleanliness is paramount in welding on things that have been in elemental sulfur service. Just a tiny amount of sulfur makes its way into that weld and you'll hot crack as fast as you can lay down a bead.

Have had good luck with blasting followed by washing with muriatic acid and finally water. Your mileage may vary.

Concentrate on mechanical cleaning ,grinding and blasting so no original surface is in the weld. Per Nathan , any S will ruin the weld.

Thank you for the input guys! Much appreciated.

Further....if welding inside the tank, make sure you have plenty of fresh air blowing in for the welder, so consider that need when selecting a welding process....not greatly compatible in confined spaces for GMAW or GTAW because of gas interruption. Use SMAW if possible or protect the shielding gas.
