What kind of factor will a velocity of 300ft/sec have on the wear rate of 316 Stainless Steel? If (and why) 316 is not recommended, what castable alloy would be recommended?
I have data that was generated with water jet testing at 120-140 ft/sec. There was no metal loss under those conditions.
300 ft/sec is getting up there. If you have to use that velocity I would look at 2205. It has higher strength and work hardens more. If you want to stay with an austenitic alloy then 21-6-9 (Nitronic 40) might be a good option. Actually alloys like AL-6XN also have very good erosion resistance.
All of these grades have cast equivalents.
The absolute best alloy that I have ever used for erosion resistance is Haynes Cobalt based Ultimet.

Do you need Austenitic SS or could other material work?
Is this a self mated application?
Any type lubrication?
Any other information that would help define your application.
The wear rate (mg/1000 cycles) generally drops off with speed on most materials. The only problem is that the measuring interval gets shorter. One big problem with 316 SS is getting the part in motion without galling.
If your component is amendable to be cast in Nitronic 60 this would be the way to go.
