Weathering Steel Poles

The January 2004 issue of Modern Steel Construction had a "Steel Interchange" response by Keith Mueller on design considerations for weathering steel structures. Several of the recommendations, which are based on United States Steel Corp. literature, have led me to question practices on electric utility transmission lines. The manufacturer recommends against the use of galvanized hardware or placing treated wood products on weathering steel. I know that many utilities are using weathering steel poles as a replacement for wood poles.

Does anyone know of research that has been done which would indicate that the mfr. recommendations were too conservative? Has anyone replaced weathering steel poles that have been in service for a long time and observed problems or seen premature failures? Does anyone take special precautions for connections on weathering steel poles?

Thanks for your feedback.

Mike
