I'm new to NX3 and am trying to get to grips with the attributes and expressions.

We make subsea equipment, and the weight in air and the weight in water are important attributes for a part and indeed the assembly in which the part is used. We do not have the advanced assembly module - so no weight management.

For a part it is relatively easy to get the displacement if the mass and volume of the part is known. I've assumed that I can write an expression for this as an attribute in the part, although as yet I haven't achieved this.

It is a lot more difficult for an assembly - what you really need is a "shrinkwrap" of the external surface of the assembly i.e. the exposed volume of the assembly - I imagine this as using cling film on the assembly to give a volume of the external faces of the various parts, which are exposed to the seawater.

Anybody any ideas on how to approach this?

Regards.
