Weird Surface Defect (Honeycomb like)

Dear All,

Can anyone tell me what kind of defect as per picture attached? It appears on the material after we performed welding.

The material is SA312 TP304L pipe weld to a SA182 F304L Flange.

Aggressive use of a chipping hammer.

Yup, looks like mechanical damage to me, nothing related to the welding itself.
It could have been there to start with, and you reveled it cleaning up the weld.
But more likely it is either from your weld prep or your weld cleaning.

There's one "dimple" that appears to be on the weld itself, so post weld, and not a material defect.

If its a powder it could be "bridge breaking" by an operator?

Thank you all for your reply.

We too suspecting the defect is caused by chipping hammer.

Material had been PMI tested. All chemical composition is accepted as per code.
