I have a P1 vessel (2.5" thick) that requires some build-up of the internal wall due to wear. I have a groove welding procedure that allows for grooves up to 0.68" and all fillet welds...a PWP-7 procedure here in Canada. If my procedure qualifies me for all fillets up to 1/2" of deposited metal, can I use the procedure to build-up the wall of the vessel up to 1/2" with applied fillets, or does the limitations on groove weld size apply?

Thank you to any that can provide an opinion on this matter.

Usually NBIC-23 or API-510 is commonly followed for repair & alterations. If you decide to follow NBIC, then existing welding procedure has to meet all requirements of Welding Method-1 OR 2, as referred in Part-3 of NBIC. If not a repair procedure should be qualified before any weld build-up.
Thanks.

Please review ASME Section IX QW-202.3 Weld Repair and Buildup. The NBIC refers back to ASME Section IX for WPS/PQR qualification.

For weld build-up on a plate, you need to qualify on a coupon at 1.5" thickness or greater per (b)

(b) For other than fillet welds, the thickness range for
base metal and deposited weld metal for each welding
process shall be in accordance with QW-451, except there
need be no upper limit on the base metal thickness provided
qualification was made on base metal having a
thickness of 11/2 in. (38 mm) or more.
