Hello,

The vessel is designed as ASME VIII-1. Special Loose Type Flange (Seal Ring) is welded to the shell. The applicable code sketch, for welded joint size, would be Figure 2-4 sketch (3a). Due to special design of the seal ring (the Loose Flange) we cannot provide weld throat of min.=0.7*c as specified on Figure 2-4 (3a). Therefore the FEA is performed, to validate the weld strength. How do we validate the FEA results? That is, what allowable stress should be used? What kind of stress (membrane, bending, shear, membrane + bending) should be checked in the FEA?

Thank you!

If there are mandatory provisions in Section VIII, Division 1, you cannot overrule them with FEA.

Nevertheless, please refer to the 2019 Edition, Appendix 46.
