Hoping someone can help me with a question regarding weld maps. Is anyone aware of a standard/reference that details the requirements for what information must be provided in a weld map? I would like more information supplied on a weld map than the Contractor is willing to supply, and would like to have a reference to point to in support of my case.

IN most cases weld maps may be use in lieu of welder stancils at the joint.

If the weld map can clearly identify who welded what then not much else is required based on my experience. I have a B31,3 Para 328.5.1 says

"Unless otherwise specified in the engineering design, each pressure containing component shatt be marked with the identification symbol of the welder or welding operator. In leiu of marking the weld, appropriate records shall be filed."

Note that no drawing/sketch or form of document is specfied.

If truly something in addition to the code of construction/fabrication were required, it would be spelled out in other contract specified documents.

Appropriate is pretty general. Therefore apply the appropriate interpretation:)
