Weld repair qualification of ASME BPVC Section IX

We are a casting supplier of manufacturing austenitic stainless and carbon steel.
A biginner to perform welding qualification of ASME BPVC Section IX conforming to API 6D.
The goal is to repair welding on casting during casting processes.

How we choice thickness of testing coupon for WPS, PQR and WPQ?
May we adopt 38mm of groove weld for all qualification of QW-202.3 Weld repair and buildup of ASME BPVC Section IX-2015 (page 30)?

Hi James,

QW-202.3 is applicable.
A test coupon (butt weld) 38 mm thick qualifies for:
Base metal thickness 4,8 mm with no max. limit (if impact test are not required)
Base metal thickness 16 mm with no max. limit (if impact test are required)
deposited weld metal thickness: max. 200 mm

We only repair on casting for minor casting defect during casting processes.
Probably 10mm max. is enough.
Can you suggest us the thickness of testing coupon for qualification to welding repair on casting?
We are not familiar with ASME Section IX.

If you are unfamiliar with Section IX hire a welding engineer or consultant that knows Section IX to help you. You need to have a copy of Section IX and understand it. This forum is not going to do that for you.

Agree with metengr.
If you are looking to perform repairs on castings you must be fully conversant with the code and with what you are doing.
Correct WPS, correct welder qualification, correct preheat (if required), correct PWHT (if required),correct NDT post repair - these cannot be given to you over an internet forum.
If a customer discovers a repair in a purchased casting he is going to want to know the full history of that repair and if you can't supply the correct documentation you could end up in a court of law.

According to API-6D: Welding, including repair welding, of all pressure components shall be performed with welding procedures qualified to ASME Section IX or EN 288−3, and 8.2 and 8.3 of API-6D. Same applies for welders also.

I would suggest you may read though ASTM-A-488, in addition to ASME Sec-IX It's a comprehensive document titled as: Standard Practice for Steel Castings, Welding, Qualification of Procedures and Personnel.
Though the requirements are heavily based on ASME Sec-IX, the repair philosophy and qualification regime for casting repair could be slightly different.

Understanding this document may make procedure qualification easier for casting.
