I'm new to forums, so please excuse my lack of etiquette.

I have a customer that is trying to weld an M12 DIN929, 3-Projection Weld Nut to 5/16 low carbon steel. He has not had any success. They have satisfactory results with others - M5, M6, M8, M10 & 1/2-13. They are using a 120kva Press style welder. Looking for setting recommendations. Thanks in advance.

A typical weld schedule for this type of nut is as follows:

electrode force: 6670 N
current: 22-24 kiloamps
time: 11-13 cycles (Hz)

It should be able to achieve a minimum push-off strength of 8000 N and a minimum torsional strength of 136 Nm.

TPV -

I sent your recommendation to my customer. Here's his response -
"Thanks for the info. The machine I have just won’t produce that many amps. I can push it to 22 KA, but if there is any metal in the throat, the impedance goes too high, and it errors out. I am sure the setting the guy listed are good, I just can’t reproduce them on the machine I have."

I'm not familiar enough with welding equipment to understand what the problem is. So we're still looking for a solution, but will probably look for other options.

Thanks much for the assistance, TPV.

The electrical innards of the welder are insufficient for a larger nut like this. Probably need a larger machine.

I assumed that's what the solution would be. :-( Thanks again!
