Weld symbol--reinforcing or backing fillet

AWS A2.4 Fig. 7 implies that when no size is given for a reinforcing or backing fillet, then the fillet leg size is the same as the face width of the groove weld.

Is this the case? Is it explicitly stated anywhere in the text of A2.4?

Am I correct in thinking that the fillet weld size would then be the material thickness for a single groove and half the material thickness for a double groove?

(and should I really be asking this question in the AWS forum?)

It looks that way in A2.4 figure & but not so when you just look at the figures for prequalified joints TC-U4a, B-U5b etc in D1.1.

Have you checked the index of D1.1 for Fillet weld---reinforcing?

It occured to me after I posted that D1.1 figures 3.3 and 3.4 have a footnote for the fillet weld reinforcing. It's note 7 in the 2002 D1.1

Per your answer at another site entirely, D1.1 & D1.5 Note 7 to the standard joint details gives a range of dimensions for the required reinforcing fillet for T & corner joints.

Is it customary for one to leave off the reinforcing fillet dimensions on plan drawings and rely on that note?

I am sorry I cannot offer an authoritative opinion to your question as it's an issue I have never paid much attention to...but will in the future.

IMO it must either be shown in the welding symbol(to the left of the fillet weld symbol..example: Fig 49 A2.4) or some note must be included in a conspicuous place, preferably the tail of the welding symbol....but I prefer the former.

The welding symbol detailing in Fig 17 of A2.4 is a better example than the brazing symbol (Fig 49).
