For pressure vessels the use of the welding symbol is not common, try to avoid it and limit it to fillet welding only.

Christine, I upvote your downvote :)

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Our company policy matches r6155's comment, so I will have to agree this time.

Can someone explain how to indicate tolerances when using the weld symbol?

For the three fabricators that I have worked for (including probably the largest stainless steel fabricator in the world), weld symbols have always been used, but not to the full extent.
A weld symbol with simple details of the weld such as fillet, butt, or groove, with weld side, and sizes is useful in that it prevents the need to go searching for the weld prep spec.
The comment on the end of the symbol has a code, referring the viewer to the Weld Prep detail and weld procedure.

I have worked (since 1970) with reputable pressure vessel manufacturers and have never used the weld symbol on shop detail drawings (fillet weld only). Prohibited for shop detail drawings of nuclear components.
