I'm on a small project where fabrication and erection tolerances where not honored, which means that bolt holes for purlins and girts need to be made for each span. I wish to change the detail and weld the splice with appropriate care and technique (thickness is 1.6 mm). I have not seen a welded overlap splice in Z purlins in PEMB manuals or details of other projects. I have seen in field welded splices but in channel sections.

What could be a potential problem? EOR is reticent to the idea.

Regards

It could be done, but welding 0.063" (1.6 mm) thickness is tricky. Special weld procedures required so that you don't burn through the material you are trying to weld. Welding code would be AWS D1.3 in the US. A lot of the PEMB attractiveness is there is rarely any on-site welding required.
