Hi, Does anyone know if for an existing welders qualification where a new customer requires extra testing if a full new welder test is required or if a new coupon can be welded with only the additional tests carried out. In this case we are talking about an additional corrosion test that a new customer requires and we still have some of the original test material available so the heat numbers will be the same for bot original and new tests if so which section of ASME IX allows this. Thanks in advance

Have done it in the past but often at new construction sites new and previously qualfied welders will be required to fully qualify to Code and additional customer requirements.

ASME IX doesn’t deal with corrosion testing, so you are at the whim of the customer; try asking them what they specifically want. They might be happy with a satisfactory prolongation of the existing qualification and just the additional corrosion test. Of course, we could debate whether the corrosion test result is a function of the welder’s skill, but that will be another thread.

I have always treated these as a new qualification.
There are usually additional essential variables in order to assure corrosion performance.
