Hi,

What I understand from QW-304 is you can't qualify a welder to weld materials in the P21 to P26 group by radigraphic inspection of his samples. The samples have to be mechanially tested, tensile test and bend test.

Am I right?

Regards,

AB

Dear tankereng,

You can qualify them with RT for GTAW groove welds.

Regards.

tHANK YOU FOR YOUR ANSWER dHURJATI sEN,

I forgot to specify the process. It would be GMAW. From your answer I understand that GMAW groove welds can't be qualified by RT for materials P21 to P26.

Thankyou,

That is correct, for GMAW.

The samples have to be mechanially tested, tensile test and bend test.

No tensile test is required. Visual and bend tests only.

The devil is in the details; she also wears prada.

Welder qualification rarely requires tensile testing per ASME Section IX.

You will be required to qualify the WPS before you qualify the welders, but the welder that welds the qualification coupon, and it if is successful, is qualified within the limits listed by the WPS. In other words, even if the welder welds a 1/2-inch thick assembly using no less than three layers, he would still be bound by the range qualified by the WPS.

Best regards - Al
