I am looking to weld to 4140 HT components together. I know that welding HT 4140 is generally a bad idea, but in the current situation it is unavoidable. the bar is a round bar at .5'' diameter, and the tubing is .049'' thick at 5/8'' diameter. I was planning on preheating both to roughly 400 degrees in either an oven or with an oxygen acetylene torch, welding the joints, allowing to cool to room temp, then stress relieving at 700 degrees. Both bar and tubing will be tempered at roughly 750 degrees for a yield strength of 200 ksi. The tubing will be welded to the 4140 rod at one end and an a36 steel joint at the other, (this can be substituted for half inch 4140 alternatively if suggested). Will this process work and yield a strong weld? Unfortunately information such as the filler metal being used is not available, but I am open to recommendations on the subject.
