Could someone please suggest an electrode to use for welding 12" API 5L X60 schedule 80 (wall thickness 0.688").

We've run a PQR using ER80S-Ni1 tig root and E8018-C3 electrode. But during the nick breaks we are discovering porosity which is causing the test to fail. The last run we completed one of the tensiles failed in the weld metal and porosity was evident in the break.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

The porosity was not caused by the weld filler metal classification. It may have resulted from improper storage/conditioning of the filler metals but more likely was due to welder performance (or lack thereof). I have welded X-60 with E7010-G, E8010-G, ER70-S2/S3/S6, E7018, E71T-1, etc. as well as your chosen filler metals.

stanweld:

The welder who's been doing the welding for the procedure qualification is extremely experienced and I can't recall the last time any of his welds needed a repair.

I appreciate your input, we're going to try an E8016-G rod for the fill.

There are some suspicisions by people more experienced than myself, that we had a bad batch of rod.

I agree with Stanweld. The welding consumables are suitable. There is either something wrong with the consumable manufacturing, the storage of the consumables, or welding practices. With porosity, it is usually poor storage, or pipline welders used to running long-arc with 6010. Make sure arc length with 8018 is very very short.

You could easily get a bad batch of rod, especially if you purchased it from one of the many repackaging (manufacturers???)suppliers.

what is the material fittings to be used for API 5L pipe
