Welding electrode required for welding A105 to API 5L GrB.

We are required to weld 550NB (22&quot;) diameter API5L GrB pipes with A105 SORF flanges. The Carbon content in the flanges has been resticted to <0.25% for weldability. The method of welding will be normal SMAW with stick electrodes.
My questions are

1. Can we use normal E6013 electrodes?
2. Can the WPS be qualified using A36 plates which are readily available? Plates of A105 and API 5L GrB material are not easily available.

Hope my query is understandabe.

It really depends on how critical your application is, risk of failure etc.

A 7018 electrode will give much better high and low temperature properties; it will also, if treated correctly, reduce the risk of hydrogen cracking.

But if your application is not critical, then a 6013 electrode will be OK.

Most carbon steel plates with similar composition will qualify A105 and APL 5L Grade B if you are using the ASME code.

 
I am not a welding expert but here goes:

Per ASME Section II
SA-36 is a P1/G1 material and
ASTM SA 105 is a P1/G2 material

Per ASME Section IX the &quot;G&quot; number is a supplementary essential variable for a SMAW WPS and must be addressed in the PQR. It is my opinion that you will need a PQR for the P1/G1 to P1/G2 weld. Try and find a piece of SA 516 gr 70 to weld to your SA 36 plate.

Low hydrogen coating is recommended as welding1's comment. E7016 also can be used in this application.
 
Our normal SMAW WPS for welding these materials from one side (like piping welds) calls for using E6010 on the root and hot passes and E7018 on the remainder of the weld.

One will not find plates made from A105 (a forging spec) or API 5L-B (a piping spec) for your WPS qualificaiton.

Welding procedure qualification using materials of the same P number and Group number as the production materials will meet Code requirements as long as all essential variables (and supplementary essential variables if impact testing is required) are addressed and complied with.
