Try the web sites for the major mfg's of welding equipment. In the U.S. this would be Lincoln Electric, Miller, etc. Most of them have on line FAQ's and literature available. There is a lot of free literature available from the major mfgs also. Check the internet for Mil specs concerning welding, there is a lot of info available from the military, primarily the Navy in the U.S., covers methods, material, equipment, inspection, etc.

jcrowe gave you some excellent advice. Go to the websites for Lincoln and Miller. I can't remember if Cloos or ESAB has anything good on their website. US government specs like MIL standards can be obtained at the following site:

Some UK Defence Standards can be obtained at the following site:

Both of these have some documents on welding. Other sites to peruse:

TWI in the UK: EWI in the US: Welding section of Metalforming magazine:
My last suggestion is that anytime you are seeking information on a topic, perform a web search at It is the best search engine available.

A very good practical site for welding is: -

It gives lots of useful information; it’s courtesy of the US military. Unfortunately the site is not very slick! The pages are huge in length and contain big graphic files, can take ages to load.

This is a cut down version of twi.co.uk; it’s much easier to navigate and contains many of the basic articles on welding technology.
