WELDING GAPS 1

Hi everyone. We weld Hot Rolled steel, and we would like to know if there is a standard that allow us to determine the welding gap between two parts of same or different thichness. In another way what is the necessary gap and tolerances that we need between two part in order to weld them and obtain a good penetration ( of course we will set all the other factors, Amp, v,...).
Is there a web site that discusses the welding gaps and tolerances.?

The question you ask is not difficult and would be hard to give specific advice without more details about your joint design and welding process. There are AWS joint designs that may answer your question.

The following is an over simplification. A simple rule for groove welds is to keep the gap (root opening) as small possible, normally 1/16" minimum, to get acceptable welds and minimize the amount of weld metal required. The gap is normally equal to the width of the land.

The following variables can affect the gap, configuration, welding process, thickness of material, type of material, position, electrode selection, groove shape, and several others.

The following websites offer very inexpensive books that cover everything you need to know about welding joint design.
I particularly like the Lincoln Books like the “Design of Weldments” by Blodgett. This book has a very extensive section on joint design.

Both sites off some very good books for study and reference at very attractive prices.




Come back with a little more detail in what you are trying to do and someone will provide more detailed information.
 
Thank you for the responses.Our engineering dept. and manufacturing do not agree on the necessary size of the welding gaps. We need to figure out how to determine the size of the welding gaps based on the material and the thickness of parts welded.We understand that the quality of the weld will depend on several other factors.For us the above two factors are very important and especially thickness of material (we mainly weld HR materials).
