Welding of Steel Floor Plates To Steel Structre

HI everyone.

Would anybody know the specifications (length of weld, spacing between welds, etc.) of intermittent welding of diamond 4.5 thick hot-rolled steel plates to steel structure, as means of fixation. I have been looking everywhere and I just cannot find anything on the subject.

If not codified, depends only on necessary resistance to stresses (i.e., design).

No. This is similar to fastening floor sheathing. While the codes are generally prescriptive in this area, they do not address steel floor plate to framing attachments....that is up to the designer. If you are not concerned about liquid leakage, debris collection or other issues that would require seal welding, I would anticipate 2" on 12 inches as being adequate to secure the plates, assuming you are not using the plates as a diaphragm.
 
Ron is correct; you have to design the connection adequate to resist the applied forces. In this case, provide enough cross-sectional area at the throat of the weld to resist whatever in-plane shear is applied to the plate (with appropriate safety factors as prescribed by the governing code).
 
I'd look into ship building. Those deck or side plates have the same potential for heat caused expansion then shrinkage. When I was in the navy the welders in the navy repair yards used procedures for weld bead length and time between them to avoid this problem.
